BEIRUT:
The list backed by the Future Movement-led March 14 coalition, the
Progressive Socialist Party and Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya, won Sunday’s
by-elections for five seats on the Beirut Order of Engineers’ council.
According
to official results announced Sunday night, candidates George Feghali,
Jahida Itani, Michel Matta, Marwan Sharrouf, Mughir Sinjaba won the five
council seats with 4,642, 4,710, 4,576, 4,573 and 4,620 votes
respectively.
In north Lebanon, the list backed by March 14 and
Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya also won four seats on the North Lebanon's Order of
Engineers council.
The winners are Mahmoud Fawwal, Habib Shami, and Atiya Merheb and Issam Fadous.
Turnout
was high compared to last year’s by-elections as engineers affiliated
with the March 14 coalition and the Hezbollah-led March 8 group geared
up to vote – 9,824 of 27,000 eligible engineers took part in Sunday’s
vote.
