Urmila Matondkar began her celluloid career as a child artiste with the film _Kalyug. Masoom, which was Urmila’s next film about a family coping with an illegitimate member, showed her acting talents and she received critical acclaim fans and the film industry alike. She went on to act in a number of films
including Dacait, in which she plays Sunny Deol's little sister who gets raped. Urmila then made her debut as an adult actress in Narasimha which as again opposite Sunny Deol, after which she did the fantasy film Chamatkar opposite Shahrukh Khan. Shreemaan Aashique, a comedy on male chauvinism was done by Urmila opposite Anupam Kher and Rishi Kapoor and was followed by a crime movie Drohi (1992). Unfortunately no matter what she did, it never could make her as good as Manisha Koirala and Raveena Tandon who were already at the peak of their popularity.
Then Ram Gopal Varma offered her Rangeela, which was the tale of a girl's journey in the film industry. The movie came as a refreshing surprisingly new look for Urmila, which transformed her from a Maharashtrian middle-class girl into a sexy and glamorous actress. With this movie Urmila became the name and embodyment of sensuality on the Indian screen. She is still known for her sizzling sensuality and her stunning looks.
She is an actress of great talent which is very noticible in her roles of depth and substance in films like Pyaar Tune Kya Kiy,. Om Jai Jagadish, Pinjar, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara, a drama based on India's partition and about a man accused of Gandhi's murder and Ek Dhun Banaras Kee.
