Biography:
Born in Hyderabad, in 1970. Tabassum Hashmi relocated to Mumbai, when
she was very young. After a brief appearance in Dev Anand’s, Hum
Nawjawan at the age of fifteen, she happened to lose touch with cinema.
She studied at St. Xaviers college in Mumbai and took on acting after
her sister, Farha Naaz married and settled down. Her first movie, Pehla
Pehla Pyar was a great big dud, and her big break came in the form of
Vijaypath (1994) where she came to be recognized as the ‘Ruk Ruk Ruk’
girl. Various other flops later, 1996 came onto be the big year of her
career. From there on, Tabu has moved on to prove her acting prowess not
only in Hindi movies. But, also in Tamil, Telegu and Crossover cinema.
Her performances in Chandni Bar (2001), Maachis (1996), and Maqbool
(2003) amongst others are worth remembering. Her crossover project, The
Namesake, directed by Mira Nair starring Irrfan Khan and Kal Penn,
captured her ability to shine in though bleak roles wonderfully. One of
the most critically acclaimed actresses in the industry, Tabu happens to
the veteran, Shabana Azmi’s niece. She shuttles between her two homes,
Hyderabad and Mumbai and happens to be one of the “lesser” controversial
actress, in the industry right now.
