Over 5,000 named and unnamed leaders and activists of main opposition BNP and its front organisations have been sued in two cases over Thursday’s vandalism, arson attacks and clashes in the capital.
Sub-inspector Shahi-dullah said two cases were filed with Paltan police station on Thursday night, accusing 15 named and about 5,000 unnamed BNP leaders and activists of involvement in vandalising and torching vehicles, including a police van, and attacking law enforcers.
The first case was filed for their kamikaze attack on police in an apparent bid to “kill” the law enforcers with hand bombs and vandalising vehicles.
The other case was filed for torching motor vehicles, including a police van, Shahidullah added.
The accused include Juba Dal President Moazzem Hossain Alal, Swechchhasebak Dal President Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Juba Dal leader Rafiqul Alam Majnu, and Chhatra Dal leaders Habibur Rahman Habib and Ishaq Sarkar.
The police officer, however, said none has been arrested in this connection so far.
Leaders and activists of BNP and its front organisations staged a rally in front of the party’s central office at Nayapaltan on Thursday afternoon, protesting the disappearance of M Ilyas Ali.
At one stage, law enforcers and BNP activists were locked in a violent clash that left at least 30 people injured.
Former lawmaker Ilyas Ali, also BNP’s organising secretary, was abducted from the capital’s Banani area on Tuesday night.
Our Khulna Correspondent adds: As many as 300 leaders and activists of BNP were sued in a case in Khulna.
Khulna Sadar police filed the case the same night, accusing 16 named and 274 unnamed leaders and activists, including president of Khulna city-unit Chhatra Dal Arifurzzaman Arif and joint secretary of Khulna city BNP Tariqual Islam, for obstructing the police in the course of their duty, vandalising vehicles during an angry demonstration.(SONY5STR.BLOGSPOT.COM)
