6 new private Banks approved

 

Dhaka, Apr 8 (UNB) – The board of directors of the Bangladesh Bank on Sunday approved six new private commercial banks, mostly sponsored by political bigwigs.
The approved commercial banks are Union Bank Limited, Modhumati Bank Limited, Farmers’ Bank Limited, Meghna Bank Limited, South Bangla Agriculture and Commerce Bank and Midland Bank Limited.
The approval came from a lengthy meeting of the central bank board held at its conference hall with governor Dr Atiur Rahman in the chair.

LoI’s for nine new banks next week

 

(FE) The central bank will issue letters of intent (LoIs) to nine newly-approvedcommercial banks by next week, asking them to comply with the requirements and existing rules and regulations before getting licences, officials said.
“We’ll issue the LoIs to the nine approved banks in line with the decision of our board of directors at its last meeting,” a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told the FE Monday.

A journalist couple was killed in front of their five-year-old son at their West Rajabazar residence in the city early Saturday.
Both Sagar Sarwar, a news editor of private TV channel Maasranga Television, and his wife Meherun Runi, a senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were stabbed to death, Harunur Rashid, additional deputy commissioner (Tejgaon zone) told The Daily Star

Progress in Journalists murder case

Investigators yesterday claimed that they had made headway in the probe into the gruesome murders of the journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi. They, however, refused to divulge any details before arresting the culprits.
The law enforcers could not arrest anyone in connection with the murder till last night. Earlier on Saturday afternoon, the home minister directed them to put the perpetrators behind bars within 48 hours.
Meanwhile, Nawsher Alam Roman, younger brother of Meherun Runi, filed a murder case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the afternoon without mentioning the name of any accused.

DHAKA, April 3 (BSS) – Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun today said stringent security measures will be taken across the country for smooth celebration of the Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year.
A total of 14, 000 law enforcers in the capital and 30,000 across the country will be deployed to make the security arrangement foolproof, she said after coming out from a meeting on peaceful celebration of Pahela Baishakh.
Home Secretary CQK Mostaq Ahmed, Inspector General of Police Hasan Mahmood Khandker and other high officials of different law enforcement agencies were present on the occasion. “Security blanket will be thrown on the city’s Ramna Park area, the main venue for celebration of the Pahela Baishakh,” she said adding that none will be allowed to enter the venue with vehicles.
